AG Merrick Garland roasted after video of him leaving DOJ went viral

Social media users hung up on US Attorney General Merrick Garland after a video of him leaving the Department of Justice in celebration went viral online.

A DOJ video showed Garland walking out of the department Friday to cheers and applause from department employees and other government officials who had lined the halls to see him off.

However, the attorney general’s critics gave him a very different reception on X, formerly Twitter.

“Well done Merrick Garland – pathetic hack. @PamBondi will finally restore DD’s dignity. MAGA!” RNC Research wrote in X.

The embattled attorney general was a regular target of conservatives and GOP leaders, who called him corrupt during the four years of the Biden administration.

Critics accused Garland of arming the department against President-elect Donald Trump after the official launched an investigation into Trump’s handling of classified information that included a raid of Mar-a-Lago. Garland admitted that he “personally approved” the raid.

Conservatives have grilled Garland over his department’s treatment of Catholics on multiple occasions — one in which GOP lawmakers accused the DOJ of refusing to “bring justice” after attacks on Catholic churches.

Garland was also grilled at a congressional hearing on alleged FBI targeting of Catholics.

Conservatives went after the attorney general in 2021 after he directed the FBI and U.S. attorney’s offices to hold meetings with federal, state and local law enforcement leaders about ways to combat what the DOJ called a ” increase in bullying, intimidation and threats of violence against the school”. board members, teachers, and workers in our nation’s public schools” coming from parents.

Prominent conservatives at X apparently hadn’t forgotten his record in their responses to the clip.

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., condemned Garland’s record, posting, “Merrick Garland has left TheJusticeDept for the FINAL TIME. His DD lashed out at his worried parents. His DD attacked religious Catholics. His DD attacked political opponents. His DD was armed in an unprecedented way. This shameful era of brazen political legalism is OVER AT LEAST.”

Republican communications adviser Matt Whitlock called Garland “one of the biggest disappointments in recent political history.”

He added, “Garland went from D.C. district chief to illegal political hack for the dark money groups that controlled the Biden White House. The boy sent the FBI after his parents to speak at school board meetings.

Gov. Ron DeSantis press secretary Jeremy Redfern blasted the attorney general, tweeting: “We never thought we’d see someone damage the DOJ’s credibility more than Eric Holder, but then Merrick Garland happened .”

Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., condemned the official, declaring, “Merrick Garland presided over the federal government’s evil weaponization against the American people. He has caused irreparable damage to the institution. Good rescue.”

Conservative columnist Tim Young criticized DOJ staff for applauding Garland in the video of his exit.

“Fire every DOJ staffer who applauds Merrick Garland. If you can cheer for him, you should have ZERO impact on the justice system in this country once Trump takes office,” he wrote.

Federalist CEO Sean Davis went after the clapping staff as well, saying: “Identify and fire everyone in the photo applauding Garland or crying over his exit.”

Babylon Bee managing editor Joel Berry agreed with Davis, replying: “Just lay it all down. Empty it completely.”
