The new cover of the Time magazine issue shows Donald Trump quickly clearing President Biden’s belongings from the Oval Office desk with his arm, sending Biden’s aviator sunglasses flying.
The illustrated cover is the fourth for the magazine by artist Tim O’Brien, who has previously depicted Trump either sitting or hovering over the famous table set in a series of back-to-backs using ever-rising water levels as a metaphor for its chaos or turmoil. first presidential term.
The initial cover of the series was released in February 2017, a month after Trump’s first inauguration, accompanied by the text, “Nothing to see here”.
It shows Trump sitting, his fingers clasped, as a rainstorm pours in, causing his tie and linen hair to flap violently in the wind.
The second cover was published in April 2018 with the one-word caption “Stormy” and was released amid news of his alleged 2006 consensual affair with adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, and the award of her follow-up from Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen.
The image is virtually identical to the first cover, except that it shows the water level has penetrated the top of the set table.
Less than six months later, in September 2018, the third in the series depicted Trump swimming out of frame as the Oval Office appears completely flooded. The words “In deep” accompanied the image.
The magazine unveiled the new cover in a post on X on Sunday, touting its cover titled “Donald Trump’s divisiveness is back.”
The article calls the incoming 47th commander-in-chief “an unpredictable force for change” and admits, “Whatever one thinks of him, he has changed America in ways unimaginable a decade ago.”
The cover itself is something of a Rorschach test. Those who view Trump favorably seem to interpret the cover as a statement about out with the old, in with the new, as the Oval Office changes hands.
“Adults are in charge now,” one Trump supporter wrote in response to Time’s post.
Another person said, “Now then, let’s get down to business. There’s a big mess to clean up.”
But Trump haters interpreted the image as an agent of chaos, casually upending the status quo and norms of previous administrations.
“Here comes the chaos,” wrote one concerned X user.
Another person said: “One day these TIME covers will look like what Soviet propaganda looks like today, absolutely disgusting!”
In December, the magazine named Trump its annual Person of the Year — drawing swift condemnation from readers who backed Vice President Kamala Harris in the election a few weeks earlier.
